Camgirl Taxes and Privacy

This question came to my personal email and my response was undelivered, so I am going to publish it Q&A style and sincerely hope the sender, who will remain anonymous unless I hear otherwise, doesn’t mind.

question

Hi Angie. My name is [anonymous]. I’ve asked you a couple questions on your site. My big question now is how troubling is this with the IRS and what not? Could this potentially affect me in obtaining jobs? Like is it easy for an employer to see that I’ve done this? And I’m looking to get checks in mail from streamate; what information does it release on those? I’m still super new and have no idea what I’m doing basically lol but I’m so intrigued by this opportunity and your site really calmed some set backs of mine, so thank you for that!

I Answer:

Hey [Anonymous],

Nice to hear from you! I actually touched on this a tiny bit in the second half of What Do You Do (Part 3 of the Sex in Society series). Basically, for any official purposes nobody needs to know WHAT you actually do.

In terms of filing taxes, applying for bank accounts, and filling in your resume…

  • As a webcam model, your “job title” would be Independent Contractor – basically meaning you are self employed. Being self employed, you would have to file taxes with the IRS exactly how any self employed individual files (paying your own taxes and claiming your own deductibles).
  •

  • You can list the industry you work in as sales and/or customer service, as it is technically both. They don’t need to know what you’re selling or what service you provide, and it’s unlikely they’ll even ask unless they are nosy. In the case of nosy-ness, you have every right to decline to answer, or throw in a cover story as per the article I linked to above.
  •

There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with being a webcam model, but unfortunately we all know the social stigma is still an issue for a lot of people.

  • As for a potential employer finding out that you’re a webcam model, it’s possible but highly unlikely especially if you’ve blocked your own region.
  •

  • Employer’s address is your address (or the address you work from), since you are self-employed.
  •

  • Most cam sites operate under a parent company, which is what shows up on the checks you receive. Until recently, Streamate actually sent their checks out clearly marked as being from Streamate (envelope and all! not ideal lol) – presently they do come from a generic parent company that in no way indicates what you do.
  •

The site I most recommend for new models, however, is Flirt4Free through the agency 5 Points Model Management. They can provide a statement of earnings at any time on parent company letterhead, and they are much more concerned with your concerns and supportive when you need support. Their checks also say nothing about what you do, and come from the generic parent company (which I’ve been asked not to publish for obvious reasons).

As a side note, Streamate just kind of throws you to the wolves and hopes you make it lol; so while it is a great site if you already know what you’re doing, I personally think you would have a better chance of success starting out with a talent agent at 5 Points.

I hope this helps you out. Please let me know if you need any further clarification or have any other questions! Always happy to help.

    Cheers,

    Angie
